Originally written by Jeff Kahrs, with additional material by Barry Provose of Documentary Media, many hours of research by Thomas Samuelsen, as well as edits, rewrites and sidebars written by members of the Union. It is a wonderful collaborative effort. A beautiful coffee table format, this limited edition printing covers the 100 plus years of fishing history that has previously never been written. Published in 2015, it was printed using the Union printing house, Reynolds DeWalt from New Bedford, Massachusetts. It is 100% MADE IN THE U.S.A.
In 1912, crewmen working in the Alaskan halibut fishery decided at a union hall in Seattle to go on strike for a half-cent per-pound raise. This strike birthed the Deep Sea Fishermen's Union of the Pacific, the oldest known fishing union representing crewmen in the United States.
Former commercial fisherman Jeff Kahrs tells the century-long history of the DSFU, an organization that has persisted through challenging regulation, intense competition, and the harsh realities of fishing halibut and cod in the North Pacific.
